What Is a Final Exam Calculator?

Before a final exam, the key question is: what do I need to score to reach my target grade? The answer depends on your current grade, the exam's weight in the overall grade, and your target.

The calculator solves for the required exam score and tells you whether it is achievable — if the target is impossible, it shows the highest grade you could still reach.

The Formula

Required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

Where current and target are percentages and weight is the exam's share of the total grade as a decimal. For example, with an 85% current grade, a 90% target and a 30% exam weight: required = (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 ≈ 101.7% — impossible, so the calculator flags it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Use: required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a decimal.

What if the required score is over 100%?

The target is unreachable — the calculator shows the maximum grade achievable with a perfect exam score instead.

What if my final is worth 50%?

Enter 50 as the exam weight. The higher the weight, the more the exam can move your grade.

Can I calculate for a pass grade?

Yes — set your target to the pass threshold (often 60 or 70) and the calculator finds the minimum exam score.

Does this work with letter grades?

Convert your letter grades to percentages first (e.g. B+ ≈ 87%) or use the weighted grade calculator for letter inputs.
