What Is a Calories Burned Calculator?

Calories burned during exercise depend mainly on the activity, your weight, and how long you do it. This calculator uses the MET (metabolic equivalent) system — each activity has a MET value representing how many times harder it is than resting.

Walking, running, cycling, swimming, gym work, sports and everyday chores are covered. The MET values are published reference values from the standard compendium of physical activities.

The Formula

Calories = MET × weight (kg) × duration (hours)

For example, walking at a moderate pace has a MET of about 4.3. A 70 kg person walking for an hour burns roughly 4.3 × 70 × 1 ≈ 300 kcal.

Limitations

MET values are population averages. Actual burn depends on intensity, fitness, terrain and body composition — treat the result as a useful estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories do I burn walking?

A 70 kg person burns about 280–350 kcal per hour of brisk walking, depending on pace. The calculator estimates it precisely from MET values.

How many calories do I burn running?

Roughly 700–900 kcal per hour for a 70 kg runner at a 10 km/h pace — the calculator uses the MET for the pace you choose.

What is a MET?

A metabolic equivalent: 1 MET is resting energy use. An activity rated 8 METs burns 8× the resting rate.

Does weight really matter?

Yes — it is directly in the formula. Heavier people burn more calories for the same activity because moving more mass takes more energy.

Are these results accurate?

Good estimates for most people, but individual fitness, intensity and terrain cause variation.
