What Is a Student Loan Calculator?

A student loan calculator estimates the standard monthly payment on an education loan. Student loans are amortized like other loans, but two features matter: interest often accrues during school (subsidized vs unsubsidized), and there are a variety of repayment plans.

The calculator models the standard 10-year plan (the default for federal loans) and lets you compare longer terms. It also shows the total interest, which is often eye-opening.

The Formula

M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n)

Federal undergraduate rates are set by Congress each year; private rates depend on credit. Enter the rate on your loan — this site does not store or fetch current rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a student loan payment calculated?

The same amortization formula as any loan: payment = balance × monthly rate / (1 − (1 + rate)^−n).

What is the standard repayment term?

10 years for federal loans — the default plan the calculator models.

What rate should I enter?

Your loan's actual rate, or the weighted average across multiple loans. Rates change yearly for new federal loans.

How much interest will I pay total?

The calculator totals it — for a $30,000 loan at 6.5% over 10 years it is roughly $10,900.

What are income-driven plans?

Plans that cap payments as a share of income and forgive the remainder after 20–25 years. They are not modelled here — a full analysis needs your income and family size.
